New study shows San Diego is 2016’s fifth greenest city in America

With October being National Energy Awareness Month and 74 percent of Americans today supporting efforts to protect the environment, the personal-finance Web site WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2016’s Greenest Cities in America.

To determine the cities promoting an environmentally friendly lifestyle, WalletHub’s analysts compared the 100 largest cities across 20 key “green” indicators. Their data set ranges from “greenhouse-gas emissions per capita” to “number of smart-energy policies and initiatives.”

“Greenness” of San Diego (1=Best; 50=Avg.)

  • 51st – Greenhouse-Gas Emissions per Capita
  • 8th – % of Green Space
  • 39th – % of Commuters Who Drive
  • 52nd – Bike Score
  • 1st – Number of Farmers Markets per Capita
  • 9th – Annual Excess Fuel Consumed
  • 31st – Walk Score

Overall San Diego ranked fifth with San Francisco, Honolulu, San Jose and Fremont above it.
