Survey shows San Diego employers expect to hire at healthy pace during the 4th quarter of 2016

SAN DIEGO-CARLSBAD-SAN MARCOS, MSA employers expect to hire at a hopeful pace during Quarter 4 2016, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. Among employers surveyed, 27 percent plan to hire more employees from October through December. This number is offset by the 12 percent that plan to reduce payrolls, while 58 percent of employers expect to maintain current staff levels and 3 percent indicate they are not sure of their hiring plans. This yields a Net Employment Outlook* of 15%.

“Local employers anticipate a weaker hiring pace compared to Q3 2016 when the Net Employment Outlook was 20%,” said Manpower spokesperson Phil Blair. “Last year at this time, employers expected similar hiring activity when the Outlook was 15%.”
Hire Survey*The Net Employment Outlook is derived by taking the percentage of employers anticipating an increase in hiring activity and subtracting from this the percentage of employers expecting a decrease in hiring activity.
 
For the coming quarter, job prospects appear best in Durable Goods Manufacturing, Nondurable Goods Manufacturing, Wholesale & Retail Trade, Financial Activities, Professional & Business Services, Leisure & Hospitality, Other Services and Government. Employers in Information plan to reduce staffing levels, while hiring in Construction, Transportation & Utilities and Education & Health Services is expected to remain unchanged.
Manpower Employment Outlook Survey Results for the United States
Of the more than 11,000 employers surveyed in the United States, 22 percent expect to add to their workforces, and 6 percent expect a decline in their payrolls during Quarter 4 2016. Sixty-nine percent of employers anticipate making no change to staff levels, and the remaining 3 percent of employers are undecided about their hiring plans. When seasonal variations are removed from the data, the Net Employment Outlook is +18%, a slight increase compared to the Quarter 3 2016 Outlook, +15%.
