Focus Features’ highly-anticipated film, Loving which stars Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga is already generating awards season buzz. The film will be in theaters this November.
From acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols, Loving celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (Edgerton and Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since. Loving v. Virginia became a precedent in the Obergefell v. Hodges marriage equality case last year.
Years later in 2007, during the historic battle for same-sex marriage equality in Massachusetts, Mildred Loving endorsed marriage equality rights stating, “…I am still not a political person, but I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.”
