A week before the new animated version of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s novella The Little Prince was about to be released in theaters, Paramount bizarrely decided against distributing it. Netflix scooped it up and it’s now streaming. This new film is only vaguely related to the book; that the aviator is in it, but older and living next door to a lonely girl who is being over-managed by her single mother. He tells the girl about the Little Prince, and they go on their own adventure, which is more typical of an action-adventure film for kids than a mid-20th century philosophical fairy tale. The movie is beautiful, visually similar to Saint-Exupéry’s gorgeous drawings, and entertaining and moving in is its own right, but calling it The Little Prince is not quite honest.
