A San Diego Police Officer has been shot dead and another near fatally wounded in a routine police stop late Thursday.
The shooting happened at around 11 p.m. local time in the Southcrest neighborhood, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told reporters early Friday outside Scripps Mercy Hospital.
The officers – both assigned to the department’s gang unit – had just pulled over a car when, almost immediately after, they called for emergency cover, Zimmerman said. It was not immediately clear if the police were in uniform or in a marked patrol car at the time.
USA Today reported that in a post on Twitter, San Diego police said Police Chief Shirley Zimmerman visited the hospital and that the injured officer was out of surgery. “He is expected to survive!” the post said.
San Diego police officials said Friday that a suspect was in custody in connection with a shooting.
