SAN DIEGO – Teams are forming – and fundraising – for the 27th annual AIDS Walk/Run San Diego. The event will take place Saturday, Sept. 24.
Teams play a crucial role in the success of AIDS Walk, and last year helped raise approximately 70 percent of the event’s total.
“AIDS Walk teams not only make a difference for HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs in San Diego, but it’s also a great way to build community,” said Ian Johnson, director of events for The San Diego LGBT Community Center, which produces the event. “It’s a great time with great people for a great cause.”
Teams can range in size from two to more than 1,000 walkers. Those teams that register 10 or more walkers/runners or raise $1,000 or more by 8am on Monday, Sept. 19, will receive the legendary yellow shoe placard featuring the team name. These teams will also get a special “Team Meeting Station” on the day of the event.
Team members can participate in either the 5K Walk or the 5K Run. Registration is open at www.aidswalksd.org.
Team Leaders are especially vital, and AIDS Walk will provide all the resources to help them achieve success. Team Leader workshops are a great way to meet other Team Leaders, learn about online fundraising and team recruitment. Register for a Team Leadership workshop by calling (619) 692-2077, ext. 247 or e-mail teams@aidswalksd.org. Team Leader workshops will take place at The Center, 3909 Centre St. on the following dates:
• Wednesday, Aug. 3 — 8-9am
• Thursday, Aug. 11 — 6-7pm
• Saturday, Aug. 13 — 10-11am
• Wednesday, Aug.17 — 8-9am
• Thursday, Aug. 25 — 6-7pm
Each year, AIDS Walk/Run raises funds for local HIV/AIDS service organizations, honors those lost to the disease and helps raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS in our community. It is the largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser in San Diego County.
