When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won’t be found – a convent! Disguised as a nun. She finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her fabulous disco-ness and killer voice to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon, it’s nun-on-the-run time, but she finds salvation in the heavenly power of her newly found sisterhood. “Sister Act” features an original Alan Menken and Glenn Slater score with a vast inspiration of musical styles from Motown, soul and funk to great big disco anthems and Barry White inspired musical comedy.
“’Sister Act’ is the perfect opener for our 36th season,” said Steven Glaudini, producing artistic director, Moonlight Stage Productions. “The show is filled with laugh out loud comedy, fun choreography, and a story that’ll move you. The creators of the musical version wisely decided to give their musical a new setting apart from the film by setting it in 1977 and placing it in Philadelphia. This time period allowed composer Alan Menken to flavor the score with soul, funk and disco with a little nod to Barry White.”
The cast for “Sister Act” includes: Daebreon Poiema (Deloris Van Cartier), Victoria Strong (Mother Superior), Rufus Bonds, Jr. (Curtis Jackson), Cornelius Jones, Jr. (Eddie Souther), Sarah Errington (Sister Mary Robert), Susan Stuber (Sister Mary Lazarus), Bethany Slomka (Sister Mary Patrick), and Jim Chovick (Monsignor O’Hara).
