Atkinson needs to stand up for gay marriage!

Jacquie Atkinson

When asked at the San Diego Republican Party Central Committee if she supported the GOP state party platform that states that marriage is between a man and a woman Republican Congressional candidate Jacquie Atkinson stated that as a state delegate she did support the party platform. Other times she has been asked about marriage equality she has stated that she thought it should be a state issue.

Will the real Jacquie Atkinson please stand up! An out lesbian who is married to another lesbian, many in the LGBT community are outraged that Atkinson is always dodging the marriage equality issue. Her main opponent has stated that marriage is between a man and a woman and seems very proud of this stand and Atkinson never challenges her opponent on this issue and remains silent.

Atkinson, who always lets the world know how proud she is to be a Marine, seems not to be proud to be a member of the LGBT community. In this same Republican primary two years ago Carl DeMaio launched his campaign with an advertisement proudly acknowledging his five year relationship with gay businessman Johnathan Hale and almost won the election. I predict that Atkinson will lose the primary and that in November Congressman Scott Peters, who supports gay marriage and LGBT civil rights, will be easily re-elected.

Jan Goldsmith supports Ted Cruz

City attorney Jan Goldsmith has not only endorsed the most homophobic presidential candidate enthusiastically but introduced him at a right wing rally for Ted Cruz in San Diego! And this past Sunday’s Union Tribune editorial was titled “Troubling mess at city attorney’s office”.

And now Goldsmith has decided to waste more taxpayers’ money and appeal the recent Ninth Circuit Court’s unanimous decision in support of openly gay Will Walters.

As for Mr. Goldsmith’s recent letter responding to my column about him. Ever heard of the expression, “Methinks thou dost protest too much?” Almost every LGBT leader I have talked to agrees that they have never seen Jan Goldsmith at any LGBT event. Yes, Jan Goldsmith and his new “BFF” Ted Cruz are very much the same except Cruz has his own hair.

Rhode Island

After speaking at Bill Beck’s “Celebration of Life” ceremony last Friday, I took a “redeye” to Rhode Island where I presented awards to former Congressman Barney Frank, current Congressman David Sicilian (who is the author of the Equality Act in Congress) and State Representative Joseph McNamara. I also spoke at a Hillary Clinton rally and met the youngest elected state official in the nation, Rhode Island State Treasurer Seth Magaziner. I just love Rhode Island. It is a beautiful state with a very well organized LGBT community. My host was the state chair of the LGBT committee of the Democratic Party, Anthony DeRose who is planning to run for state office soon. I got a great VIP tour of the state capital and met Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea (first Latina elected to state office).

Did you know that Rhode Island is the home of the first Jewish temple in the USA? I stopped by the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul and it is one of the most beautiful Catholic cathedrals in North America. And of course I sampled the state’s outstanding seafood!

  1. Why is the “Queen of Hillcrest”, Nicole Murray Ramirez, who is known to be a closeted Republican attacking the only LGBT Republican in this race? Ms. Atkinson has stated that she supports the California Republican Party platform, which was recently changed to be more LGBT inclusive. The platform advocates for state issues which is consistent with her saying that marriage equality should be a state issue. The bias in this article against Ms. Atkinson is obvious. Ms. Atkinson is called upon to challenge her main opponent who is anti-LBGT. Really? Who is that because I don’t think anyone reading this article could name any other candidates in this race other than Scott Peters who is then praised for supporting marriage equality. As an observer of local politics, there seems to be much more going on here than is being revealed. Maybe that should be the real story.

    1. @ Back Bencher – I would assume that it’s because Atkinson hasn’t fawned all over Nicole or bought him lunch and a few drinks. That’s usually all it takes. But never fear, before anything comes of his endorsement of Peters, he’ll flip like he always does. How many times did Nicole flip and flop on DeMaio? Then add the others and I strongly doubt Nicole will continue to endorse Peters. That’s just the way it is. Have you ever heard of any candidate mention Nicole? No, and there is a reason for that. He’s not respected, especially in the gay community and why would he be?
