The NFL has released a statement warning that, if Georgia’s House Bill 757 turns into law, Atlanta may not get a future Super Bowl bid.
If signed into law, HB757 would give Georgians license to discriminate against LGBT people by allowing any person or faith-based organization to deny services or employment to anyone who conflicts with their “religious beliefs.” Governor Deal, who has previously denounced HB757, will have until May 3rd to make a decision to sign or veto the bill.
The statement from league spokesman Brian McCarthy reads, “NFL policies emphasize tolerance and inclusiveness, and prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or any other improper standard. Whether the laws and regulations of a state and local community are consistent with these policies would be one of many factors NFL owners may use to evaluate potential Super Bowl host sites.”
Celebrities and business leaders have joined their voices to call on Gov. Deal to veto the bill.
