San Diego Pop-up Concerts launch in March; showcase choral diversity

Choral Consortium2SAN DIEGO – Hundreds of singers will be making surprise appearances throughout San Diego County from Balboa Park to shopping centers and food courts as part of the Choral Consortium of San Diego’s free Pop-up Concert Series taking place throughout the month of March.

“By branching out of our traditional music venues, our goals are to increase the public’s awareness of our region’s many diverse choirs and to inspire the public to participate further in choral music, either as singers or as audience members,” said Carol Manifold, president of the Choral Consortium of San Diego. “We also hope to encourage musical experimentation while having a lot of fun.”

The Choral Consortium of San Diego is a choral arts service organization consisting of a widely diverse group of 40 choral groups from around San Diego County. Member choruses include classical choirs such as the Bach Collegium San Diego and the San Diego Master Chorale, children’s choirs such as the San Diego Children’s Choir and the Escondido Choral Arts Children’s Chorus, and cultural groups such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir of San Diego, the San Diego Jewish Men’s Chorus, and San Diego Mannskor (Norwegian Male Chorus).

  1. I saw the first Pop-up Concert last night at the Old Globe Theatre courtyard and it was absolutely incredible! Kathleen Hansen, who also directs the San Diego Women’s Chorus, led the San Diego Chorus Sweet Adelines on a fun show with some really impressive choreography. The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus is up next on Saturday, March 12 at 1 p.m. at the Ralph’s shopping center in Hillcrest. Be there!
