New Orleans Queen of Bounce, Big Freedia, had to explain to fans on social media why her recent show was cancelled at The Dollar Box Showroom in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The show, which was scheduled for Friday February 12, was cancelled after the club owner, Ben Shemper, got a call from a State Alcohol Beverage Control officer who asserted that, after watching some Big Freedia videos on Youtube, her show might be in violation of Mississippi codes which prohibits certain sexual conduct where there is alcohol served.

“They said the officers would be out in full force and I would be fined,” explains Shemper, “And, while I hated to do it, I cannot risk suspension of my alcohol license so I had to cancel the show.”

Big Freedia, who has performed in Mississippi –and around the globe without issue– states: “It’s like the movie Footloose. It’s Twerkloose. It’s crazy to me that in 2016, we could have a situation like this on our hands.”

Freedia adds that she and her legal team are looking into any potential rights violation with the city of Hattiesburg.

“Until then, I’m just sorry for the club owner who lost the money and to all my fans who bought tickets and were excited for a night of Big Freedia and my dancers!”
