SACRAMENTO—The Assembly today passed ACR 132, a resolution authored by Speaker Toni G. Atkins that declares February 14, 2016 to be V-Day in California. V-Day was established 18 years ago by Eve Ensler, the writer of the acclaimed play “The Vagina Monologues,” to raise awareness about violence against women and girls.
“The United Nations found that around the world, one in three women will face physical or sexual violence in her lifetime,” said Speaker Atkins (D-San Diego). “V-Day is a worldwide activist movement that seeks to end violence against women and stop the stigma surrounding speaking up against physical and sexual violence.”
On V-Day, groups around the world will perform “The Vagina Monologues,” and the proceeds will go to local programs that support victims of violence and rape. V-Day has raised more than $100 million for community programs, taken place in 200 countries, and benefited 13,000 community anti-violence programs, and its message has reached more than 1 billion people.
