Two men who were involved in the “smash and grab” burglary series of businesses in Hillcrest and elsewhere were sentenced Jan. 25 to prison terms.
The longest sentence of 10 years and eight months went to Jeffrey Ryan Jakse, 27, who was arrested in Hillcrest Oct. 19.
Carlos Carranza Castaneda, 25, received five years and four months in prison from San Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Groch.
The duo’s nickname came from San Diego Police because they often smashed windows to get into the businesses and then grabbed the cash register’s money before quickly leaving.
Groch ordered Castaneda to pay $341 to the Saffron restaurant, located at 3731 India Street which was burglarized Sept. 29, 2015. The restitution to other businesses will be determined later after they send the judge a statement of losses.
Other businesses hit were Uptown Cleaners in Hillcrest Oct. 18, 2015 and D’Angelo’s Pizza in Normal Heights, Oct. 6, 2015. They were also charged with numerous auto thefts, evading officers, vandalism and identity theft.
Castaneda pleaded guilty to burglarizing Saffron and D’Angelo’s. Jakse pleaded guilty to burglarizing D’Angelo’s, two counts of auto theft, evading police, auto burglary and committing some crimes while free on bond on an earlier case.
Both men received jail credits of three months in jail.
