San Diego Police identified Joshua Adam Sisson, 30, as the man whom an officer shot to death Jan. 1 after he held a large kitchen knife to the throat of his boyfriend in Hillcrest.

Someone called 911 after they heard arguing between Sisson and another man in an apartment in the 500 block of Lewis Street after 10:30 p.m. Sisson had left the apartment and encountered the officer in the 4200 block of Sixth Avenue.

A police captain said Sisson refused the officer’s command to drop the knife and instead advanced upon the officer, who shot him once in the chest. The knife fell about a foot away from Sisson, who was rushed to nearby Scripps Mercy Hospital where he died.

The boyfriend and the officer were not injured. Sisson had a criminal record from a case in Vista Superior Court from 2008. He had a warrant for his arrest on a parole violation at the time of the shooting.

Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman showed up at the scene following the shooting. Police said the officer who shot Sisson has been with San Diego Police Department for 13 years.
