LGBT Weekly wins 12 awards at San Diego Press Club Excellence in Journalism Gala night

San Diego LGBT Weekly won a record 12 awards at the San Diego Press Club 42nd Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards Tuesday night. With the new awards, LGBT Weekly has now won a total of 47 awards for journalism excellence since it was founded in 2010.

The sold-out gala event, held at the Jacobs Center at Market Creek, honored outstanding work in print, broadcast and online journalism and was emceed by Barbarella Fokos and Susan Taylor. In addition to the Excellence in Journalism awards Special awards went to NBC 7’s Chuck Westerheide (Harold Keen Award); San Diego Zoo Global’s Christina Simmons (Andy Mace Award) and KPBS’ Ena Marie Craig Newell (Jim Reiman Award).

The Excellence in Journalism Awards, within a variety of categories, are judged by other press clubs across the country and by working journalists. This process ensures that the winners are strictly based upon journalism standards and quality.

LGBT Weekly won five first place, three second place and four third place awards. “This is a record year for us in terms of awards,” said Steve Lee, editor. “This recognition underlines the quality and commitment of our team of writers and I appreciate their dedication. Together we are committed to bringing the best in reporting and feature articles to the San Diego LGBT audience.”

Among those honored were food critic Lance Ryder, movie reviewer Ted Gideonse, political commentator Joel Trambley, LGBT activist Allan Spyere and the Metropolitan Community Church’s Lee Bowman. Publisher Stampp Corbin, Editor Steve Lee and Art Director Jeff Jungblut were also honored.

“While it’s an honor to be recognized by my peers, it’s an even greater honor to be a part of the exceptionally talented LGBT Weekly team,” said food critic Ryder who won a first place award for his review of local eatery Sausage & Meat.
