New HERO ad highlights discrimination veterans face (VIDEO)

A new TV commercial highlights the positive impact the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) could have, including prohibiting discrimination against veterans, writes Hayley Miller on the HRC Blog.

“I love this country and I love Texas. But here in Houston, veterans can be discriminated against just because they served in the military,” Noel Freeman, a retired senior Airman in the United States Air Force, explained. “After I got out of the Air Force I went through three interviews for a job, but a manager told me he was against all military force and wouldn’t hire me because I was a veteran.”

In addition to veteran status, HERO protects Houston residents and visitors from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, religion, and 10 other characteristics.

Earlier this week, Houston Unites, a coalition including HRC, ACLU of Texas, Equality Texas and Texas Freedom Network, released a web ad in support of HERO.
