A few weeks ago, I instructed my readers to catch up on Please Like Me before the third season premier, which is Oct. 16. The Australian comedy about the comedy of star Josh Thomas is a gay love child of Girls and Louie, both brilliantly funny and dramatically resonant. Thomas is a young, somewhat directionless gay man who lives with his slacker best friend Tom (Thomas Ward) and has to deal with his mentally ill mother Rose (Debra Lawrence), gruff and dopey father Alan (David Roberts), and a wonderful assortment of ex-girlfriends, ex-boyfriends and extended family members. The beauty of the show is in how original the situations are for a situation comedy and how natural, endearing and hilarious Thomas is as some version of himself.
