Jeffrey Tambor won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series at the Emmys Sunday night for his role in Transparent.
Tambor, who plays a trans woman on the Amazon show dedicated his award to the transgender community.
“I’ve been given the opportunity to act because people’s lives depend on it,” Tambor said. “I’d like to dedicate my performance and this award to the transgender community. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your courage. Thank you for your stories. Thank you for our inspiration. Thank you for letting us be part of the change. God bless.”
Transparent creator Jill Soloway won for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.
Soloway, the daughter of a transgender woman, highlighted the need for a non-discrimination bill for the transgender community.
“Something interesting about my Moppa,” Soloway said. “She could, tomorrow, go and try to find an apartment and in 32 states it would be legal for the landlord to say, ‘We don’t rent to trans people.’ We don’t have a trans tipping point yet; we have a trans civil rights problem.”
