Kentucky clerk Kim Davis is still refusing to issue marriage licenses despite a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court against the clerk.
The clerk cited “God’s authority” as her reason for continuing to defy the law.
Shortly after 8 A.M., Davis’ office refused licenses to the first two couples to enter the courthouse following yesterday’s ruling by the Supreme Court, which denied the clerk a stay of a federal judge’s order instructing her to issue the licenses, reported The Advocate.
The American Civil Liberties Union has now filed a contempt of court motion which will be heard Sept. 3. If found guilty of contempt, the plaintiffs have asked that Davis face escalating financial penalties for refusing to perform her job. At present, Davis has continued to receive her regular salary, even though she has refused to issue marriage licenses since the Supreme Court mandated nationwide marriage equality in late June.
