True Detective was a sensation last year. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey’s portrayals of damaged Louisiana detectives hunting a serial killer were epic. For the second season, creator Nic Pizzolatto has left the South and landed in L.A., with the four main stars this time: Rachel McAdams as tough as nails Detective Ani Bezzerides, Colin Farrell as corrupt and unpredictable Detective Ray Velcoro and Taylor Kitsch as a closeted motorcycle cop Paul Woodrugh who finds the murdered man Ani and Ray are tasked with investigating. Vince Vaughn is Frank Semyon, whose corrupt real estate deal is somehow involved. The show travels in the tropes of Los Angeles noir, from Chinatown to Mulholland Drive, and at many times, verges on camp, and I think that’s deliberate. It’s downright weird and I’m constantly shocked. It’s leaving me on the edge of my seat.
