Watch: Scott Peters’ message for San Diego Pride

As San Diegans gear up for Pride weekend Rep. Scott Peters delivered his message of support for the LGBT community. Watch the video above as Peters speaks about what LGBT equality means to him and how this year should be the biggest celebration yet.

Over the last few month, Peters has been working hard promoting equal rights for the LGBT community.

Peters was ecstatic on the Obergefell decision, and his Washington, D.C., staff was on hand at the Supreme Court to celebrate when the decision was handed down. Following the decision Peters has joined colleagues to urge the Justice Department to enforce marriage equality nationwide, and is in contact with members of the LGBT Equality Caucus in Congress as we look to the next steps in the fight toward equality – particularly around non-discrimination measures.
In June, Peters offered an amendment on the House floor to provide employment non-discrimination protections to the LGBT community in federal transportation and housing programs. The amendment, supported by the Human Rights Campaign, garnered significant bipartisan support in Congress and passed the House on a 241-184 vote, with 60 Republican votes! This was the most votes for an LGBT non-discrimination measure ever in Congress, and demonstrates that a comprehensive non-discrimination bill could pass the House.
Team Peters has also been busy in district over the past couple months with team members attending this year’s Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast. They also participated in the LGBTQ Community Forum hosted by 2-1-1 San Diego to address the marginalization and barriers that community members still face when trying to access services. Additionally, Team Peters members attended the FBI Community Relations Executive Seminar Training (CREST) for LGBT community leaders to bring continued awareness of the access points of safety, protection, and services available to those whom may be of need.
