The finale of the first season of Outlander airs May 30. The show is about British World War II nurse Claire Beauchamp (Caitriona Balfe) who is transported two centuries in the past to 18th century Scotland. How this happens is somewhat irrelevant, but the proto-feminist fish out of water drama, a romance and brogue version of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, is absorbing and, considering Claire’s love interest Sam Heughan as Jamie MacKenzie, wonderfully, if heterosexually, sexy. Balfe is a terrific, charismatic actress, and because the show was developed by Battlestar Galactica’s Ronald Moore, it has tremendous production values, taut and smart writing, and handsome direction.
