Inaugural class of RISE Urban Leadership Fellows Program announced

SAN DIEGO, Calif – RISE San Diego announced its 2015 RISE Urban Leadership Fellows at a reception on the University of San Diego (USD) campus May 1.
The program, which is delivered in collaboration with the USD School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES), uses an adaptive leadership approach that requires active engagement and deep reflection. It focuses on the personal and professional development of each RISE Fellow through intensive forums, the development and implementation of a self-selected community project, and coaching and peer learning. A core faculty of PhDs and professional coaches with a wealth of expertise in leadership studies and community change will work hand in hand with participants throughout the twelve-month program.
Twenty-four RISE Fellows were selected from a pool of over fifty applicants who represent some of San Diego’s best and brightest community leaders, activists, practitioners, and agents of social change. They have demonstrated their experience in and commitment to a range of issues affecting urban communities across San Diego, including education, urban planning and redevelopment, food justice, and gang violence prevention, among others.
The 2015 RISE Fellows are Rahmo Abdi, Dennis-Michael Broussard, Ruthie Carillo, Albert Clark-Castaneda, Jose Cruz, Ralph Dimarucut, Rashida Hameed, Brandon Harrison, Divina Hernandez, Stephen Heverly, Darnisha Hunter, Keryna Johnson, Travis Kemnitz, Christopher Knighten, Tamara Muhammad, Alyssa Osian, Khea Pollard, Ferchil Ramos, Victor Sanchez, Andrew Simmerman, Karina Spilker, Cynthia Suero-Gabler, Jerrica Sykes, and Herbert Taft.
“We are deeply humbled by the caliber, passion, and commitment of the RISE Fellows and are excited about their year-long journey ahead toward becoming stronger leaders,” said Tony Young, president of RISE San Diego.
Friday, May 15, the community is invited participate in an online version of the monthly RISE Urban Breakfast Club dialogues. The “Meet the RISE Fellows Virtual Breakfast” will take place from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag #risechat.
