The tech bros of the Bay Area are lovingly satirized in Mike Judge’s fantastic sitcom Silicon Valley. Now in its second season, the show has figured itself out after a shaky beginning, and it is now one of the funniest on TV. Thomas Middlemarch plays Richard, a delightfully awkward computer programmer who comes up with a brilliant new method of compressing data. In his quest to grow his idea into a company, he’s joined by a motley crew of variously socially awkward partners, with TJ Miller’s hilariously douchey Erlich as the standout. Some of the show is funny simply because of smart gags and awkwardness involving geeks, a more realistic Big Bang Theory, but it is also a great take-down of the obsessive capitalism and competition of Silicon Valley itself.
