LGBT community member running for mayor in Charleston, S.C.

Ginny Deerin

Back in early 2009 when almost nobody thought an out lesbian could be elected mayor of Houston Annise Parker captured the deep respect of the city’s business community, but didn’t  have their support because, they told her, a lesbian couldn’t win. Then Parker received the endorsement of the Victory Fund giving her campaign a financial boost and causing a lot of other folks to re-evaluate her viability. The rest is history.

Now in Charleston, S.C. , another another game changing election will be taking place as LGBT candidate Ginny Deerin is running for mayor of Charleston and the Victory Fund is endorsing her historic campaign.

Deerin has been deeply involved in Charleston for more than 40 years. She’s a small business owner who’s also run a multi-million dollar non-profit organization. She’s president of a firm providing management and leadership consulting services, and Ginny co-founded Project XX SC, an organization that encourages women to seek public office.

President and CEO of the Victory Fund, Aisha Moodie-Mills stated, “Make no mistake – even though she’s highly qualified, this is going to be a tough race. Ginny’s going up against the good ol’ boys network, and there are plenty of powerful groups in Charleston who don’t want the mayor to come from the LGBT community. Mayor Parker faced the same things back in 2009.”
