Dining Out for Life San Diego

Help raise funds for the San Diego LGBT Community Center’s HIV/AIDS programs by simply dining out for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner today at participating restaurants. More than 75 San Diego restaurants, bars, coffee shops and ice cream shops will donate 25-100 percent of their food and liquor sales from that day including a record number of locations donating 50 percent.

Expressions of Pride

Attend the nation’s largest multicultural LGBT literary and arts festival and gain a deeper understanding of the history and art of LGBT people of color. This year the festival features Creek author, academic, and fiddler Craig Womack, whose book Red on Red: Native American Literary Separatism is often taught in Native American Studies classes. Also featured is the award winning Chicano writer Rigoberto González, as well as Chinelo Okparanta, a Nigerian lesbian writer.

Lalla Essaydi

Moroccan-born, New York-based photographer Lalla Essaydi (b. 1956) explores issues surrounding the role of women in Arab culture and their representation in the western European artistic tradition. Her large-scale photographs are based on nineteenth-century Orientalist paintings, but work to subvert those stereotyped and sexualized representations. Aside from their timely and provocative subject matter, Essaydi’s photographs are technically impressive.
