The season premiere of the postmodern horror drama introduces a new big bad: witches, led by mystic Evelyn Poole (Helen McCrory). She becomes the nemesis of our heroine, the disturbed medium Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), who I think is the most exciting character on television right now. Returning are also vampire hunter Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), cowboy-cum-werewolf Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnet), pansexual hedonist Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), not-so-mad scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadway), and gorgeous consumption sufferer Brona Croft (Billie Piper). John Logan’s mash up of every Victorian Gothic classic is stunningly shot and acted, creepy as hell and under-watched.
