SAN DIEGO — San Diego Hardware has announced that it will be honored by the San Diego History Center at the Makers of San Diego Tribute dinner April 26 celebrating San Diego businesses, organizations and institutions that are more than 100 years old. As one of the 160 “centurions” recognized at the event, San Diego Hardware is also one of the few family-owned businesses to reach this milestone.
In 1892 (123 years ago), San Diego Hardware opened its doors downtown, carrying everything from washboards to firearms. Four generations later, it is still owned by members of the founding family and now specializes in decorative hardware and plumbing with thousands of items in stock and 4,000 different hinges for customers to view and order on its subsidiary HardwareSource.com Web site.
“We are honored to be a part of this celebration,” said Bill Haynsworth, co-owner, San Diego Hardware. “We thank San Diego for supporting us through one hundred-plus years of growth and change in this great city. Throughout the years, we have made adjustments to stay current, but our core values of great customer service have remained the same.”
In 2006, San Diego Hardware moved from its famous downtown location to a bigger store with more parking, showroom space and warehouse space in Kearny Mesa. With a nod to the past, the new store features historic photos and other details. Its beautiful hand-made hardware displays offer the widest selection of decorative hardware in the city.
The 2015 Makers of San Diego Tribute Dinner is the San Diego History Center’s annual fund raising event. This year, as San Diego celebrates the centennial anniversary of the opening of the Panama-California Exposition, the San Diego History Center is honoring businesses, organizations and institutions that have been in San Diego for 100 years and longer. Today, only about 160 businesses, organizations and institutions can claim to be 100 years and older.
