Vogue profiles its first-ever transgender model

For the first time in its history, American Vogue has profiled a transgender model.

Andreja Pejic, The 23-year-old Serbian model, who graced the cover of Out in December 2011, went through a gender confirmation process to transition into a woman last year. In the May issue of Vogue, Pejic takes part in a four-page feature entitled “The New World,” investigating fashion’s new gender frontiers, reports Out.

“Society doesn’t tell you that you can be trans,” she says, calmly describing the distress she experienced living life as a young boy at school. “I thought about being gay, but it didn’t fit. . . . I thought, Well, maybe this”—the fantasy of living life as a girl—“is just something you like to imagine sometimes. Try to be a boy and try to be normal.”
