Native son David Cruz urges Guam’s governor to allow same-sex marriage in an emotional plea

Bravo reality star, David Cruz III, of Millionaire Matchmaker, has inked a letter to Guam’s governor Eddie Calvo urging him to allow same-sex marriage on the tiny United States incorporated territory after Calvo declined to act on the matter. The missive came days after a lesbian couple – Loretta M. Pangelinan and Kathleen M. Aguero, both 28 – filed a federal lawsuit when they were refused a marriage license. The governor, a Republican, ignored a directive from Attorney General Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson ordering officials to begin issuing licenses. “[S]tate officials, backed by the governor, refused the attorney general’s directive because it wasn’t a binding legal opinion. Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo said lawmakers or the public could change the law to allow same-sex marriage, if that was their will,” according to CNSNews.com. The article went on to say that “Calvo has said the U.S. Supreme Court will soon hear oral arguments on gay marriage. He suggested Guam lawmakers could pass a law allowing gay marriage, or voters could do so in a referendum, “if it is the will of the people of Guam to make same-sex marriage legal.”

The letter, along with a video and the hashtag #GuamEqualityNow, will not impact the law but Cruz’s words will most likely bring attention to an issue that has brought one of the social issues of our time to an island known historically as a military outpost for United States’ interests in Asia and a destination for Japanese tourists.

It was not clear in the report if the letter posted was in its entirety.

“My name is David Cruz and I am a current cast member of Bravo TV’s “The Millionaire Matchmaker” I spend a good part of my life setting people up and helping people find love. But, recently something has come my way that has broken my heart.

“Last week I was saddened to hear that the Governor of Guam, the island where I grew up, is denying gay men and women their legal right to marry – EVEN after being issued a legal memorandum to do so from the Attorney General of Guam.

“I was compelled to voice my opinion about this matter as I am not only a son of Guam having grown up on the island, but also as a gay man. I spend every moment of my life helping people find love and giving advice about relationships, so I cannot stand by and watch my own community of LGBT people be discriminated against.

“I made this video to show my support for them and to rally all my friends and fans, to show their support for equal rights and to send a message to the governor of Guam!”
