The Well Beyond HIV campaign celebrates the lives of older adults living with HIV. As the population of older Americans living with HIV/AIDS grows, the daily realities, concerns and successes of their lives remain largely invisible. Well Beyond HIV puts a lens on this community and demonstrates that an HIV diagnosis is a journey, where aging well is possible. The campaign’s goal is to inspire dialogue, eradicate stigmas and amplify the voices, faces and stories of those over 50 living with HIV.
The centerpiece of Well Beyond HIV is a traveling art exhibition, curated in collaboration with The Graying of AIDS. The art exhibit gives visitors a glimpse into the lives of older adults living with HIV by highlighting the faces and stories of those over 50. Campaign heroes share their challenges and triumphs through captivating portraits and insightful testimonials, the Well Beyond HIV campaign allows audiences to experience real-life stories of inspirational people aging with HIV.
To raise awareness of this important issue affecting thousands, the Well Beyond HIV Art Exhibit will make its way to San Francisco this month.
The following is an excerpt from the inspiring story of one the four individuals featured in the exhibit, Greg Mahusay:
“In 1991, I was diagnosed with AIDS. It took a year before I told my friends and family the news. I had created this whole dramatic scene in my head, but everyone was actually very loving when I shared my story. I’m thankful that my experience living with HIV and AIDS has been smooth. My friends and I have come to believe that it’s because of my positive outlook.”
The Well Beyond HIV exhibit will be on public display from April 23-25 at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center, located at 1800 Market Street.
