In March, first lady Michelle Obama yesterday called on the nation to “flip the script” on mental health by breaking through the silence and stigma surrounding these conditions. Obama gave a ringing endorsement to Mental Health First Aid as a key tool in this fight, noting that “it really gives you the skills you need to identify – and ultimately help – someone in need. Because you never know when these kinds of skills might be useful.”
Throughout April Mental Health America of San Diego County is providing trainings at no cost. Mental Health First Aid is a free eight hour training that teaches participants how to help people developing a mental illness or in a crisis. It introduces people to risk factors and warning signs of mental health and substance use problems, and teaches them a five-step action plan to help people get the care they need in their community. It’s people learning to help people.
This training is for parents, families, educators, public safety and law enforcement departments, schools, medical staff, social services providers, human resource professionals, non-profits and for-profits organizations, corporate and private businesses— community members everywhere.
Mental Health America of San Diego County, as an adopted agency of Live Well San Diego and in partnership with the County of San Diego provides these trainings at no cost. They look forward to training all of San Diego’s residents.
