The Virginia-based Performance Institute has announced that Carl DeMaio will be returning to the organization as a senior fellow.

The Performance Institute, originally founded by DeMaio in 2000 is described as a, “…  nonpartisan, private think tank seeking to improve public and private sector performance through the principles of transparency, accountability, performance and engagement.” DeMaio sold The Performance Institute in 2007 for an undisclosed sum.

Sandiego6.com reported that DeMaio will spearhead the institute’s Transition to Governance 2016 Initiative that will feature a series of town hall forums designed to develop federal management reform recommendations for the next administration to consider. He led a similar project after he founded the organization.

“My entire career has been focused on improving the performance and transparency of government at all levels,” DeMaio said. “I’m excited to return to The Performance Institute and look forward to continuing this very important work.”

Former San Diego City Councilman DeMaio lost to Bob Filner in the 2012 mayoral election and in 2014 failed to dislodge Rep. Scott Peters (D-San Diego) in a tense congressional race.
