Catwoman comes out as bisexual

DC Comics' Catwoman

DC Comics’ Catwoman Selina Kyle comes out as bisexual in the latest issue of the hit comic series, writes Hayley Miller in the HRC Blog.

According to The Advocate, “in a scene where Kyle, who gave up her Catwoman identity to become a mob boss, confronts a new character named Eiko who has slipped into the iconic cat-eared costume in Kyle’s absence. The moment ends with a kiss between the two women.”

Genevieve Valentine, author of the comic series, wrote in a blog post, “Was it a surprise for them? In terms of their sexualities, not particularly; certainly it’s no surprise to Selina that she has an attraction to a woman.”

In the past few years, DC Comics has raised the bar on LGBT inclusion in the comic book universe.  In 2012, Green Lantern was reintroduced as gay, and in 2013 they introduced the first reality-based transgender character in a mainstream series.

This is yet another groundbreaking moment for LGBT characters in the comic book world, sending a message of inclusion and acceptance to young readers.
