Leonard Nimoy, who played the role of Mr Spock in the Star Trek franchise has died.He was 83. His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed to the New York Times that the actor died at his home Friday.
The New York Times reported that his wife said the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nimoy announced that he had the disease last year, attributing it to years of smoking, a habit he had given up three decades earlier. He had been hospitalized earlier in the week.
Many of his former co-stars, including George Takei, sent public well wishes. He had become active on Twitter in recent years, and wrote his last message on Monday, reported The Huffington Post.
Nimoy was most famous for his role as Mr Spock which he played for more than 40 years including in the original Star Trek series and subsequent Star Trek movies. He formed a long-standing friendship with William Shatner, who portrayed his commanding officer.
Among the many tributes that poured in honoring Nimoy, NASA paid tribute on Twitter to the Star Trek star:
