After the success of Arrow, the CW and DC Comics created a spin-off focused on the red-suited speedster superhero called the Flash, whose real name is Barry Allen. Played by the appealing and sweet Grant Gustin, this version of the Flash is a forensic investigator who is struck by superpowered lightning and turned into what the show calls a “metahuman.” He, his sidekicks, and the superrich, secretly sinister scientist (Tom Cavanagh) whose freak accident created the Flash and a bunch of other metahumans fight crime and solve mysteries. The main mystery is who killed Barry’s mother and framed his father. The show is lighter in mood and more consistently comic-booky than the Arrow, which is a bit grim. And it also has the delightful Jesse Martin, of Law & Order and Rent fame, as the police detective who raised Barry after Barry’s real father went to jail. Produced by gay TV mogul Greg Berlanti, the show also sports great gay guest stars, like Victor Garber, Andy Mientus and Wentworth Miller.
