AIDS/LifeCycle is a fully supported, 7-day bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise money and awareness in the fight against HIV/AIDS. AIDS/LifeCycle 2015 will take place May 31 through June 6, 2015. Every year, this landmark ride through beautiful California delivers a life-changing experience for thousands of participants from all backgrounds and fitness levels united by a common desire to do something heroic.
One of those riders this year will be Tracy Gilchrist, editor in chief at SheWired.com. She will be making the ride for the sixth time. To get an insight into what AIDS/LifeCycle 2015 means read Tracy’s story below and if possible contribute to her fundraising here.
Last June marked the 5th time I cycled from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise money for people with HIV/AIDS, and I thought I might make it my last (five being a nice round number). But I arrived home from my journey, took a break of less than a week and then hopped back on my bike. Those of you who follow me on Facebook and Instagram may have already grown weary of the continual barrage of posts of me in spandex and a helmet, posing in front of yet another other stunning So-Cal vista. The thing is that I just wasn’t ready to stop ALC. I can ride my bike every weekend, but I wasn’t ready to stop raising money for people who live with stigma, who need doctors, medicine, counseling, for people who need education about the disease, and for prevention.
Last May, three weeks before AIDS Lifecycle rolled out of San Francisco, I finally made the decision that I would ride again, and so many of you rallied to support the cause in a way that makes me tear up to this day. In three weeks I raised $4,800 and AIDS Lifecycle raised $15.2 million all told to help those with HIV/AIDS and to raise visibility that would help eradicate the stigma so many people who are positive endure.
This October I became a Training Ride Leader (TRL) for Lifecycle to help new riders become strong, confident, and safe on their two wheels. It is a great honor and responsibility, and I am happy to give back.
My biggest concern about committing to do the ride for this 6th time was for my donors. Some of you have supported and sponsored me every year, and it feels like so much to ask of you to sponsor me again, or at the very least, to put up with what will eventually become dozens of posts and emails from me asking you to open your hearts and wallets again. Really though, it should be the least of my worries. My friends, family, and colleagues are kind, generous people who care about a variety of causes. I am confident in knowing that this cause touches enough of you, and I don’t need worry about the fundraising. You all have that covered.
Please join me on another fantastic journey. Your support means the world to me, and it does so much good for people who are truly in need.
Much love and thanks.
Tracy
