I never gave up on Glee, though I understand why so many people did after the second season, when things started getting so absurd, inconsistent and repetitive that it was hard even to call it camp. Last season was disastrously bad, with half of the action taking place in New York with the original cast and the other half back in Lima, Ohio with a whole new generation of singing, dancing outcasts, who combined had barely half of the charisma of Darrin Criss. But then they announced that Glee would only have one more 13-episode season, and so many of us thought it would be a boring train wreck. But it’s actually awesome, as in as awesome as the first season. Going back to basics, the show is focusing almost entirely on wrapping up the love lives and destinies of the core cast of Chris Colfer, Lea Michelle, Naya Rivera, Criss, Matthew Morrison and Jane Lynch. The musical numbers have been inspired – like the mashups of songs from Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill and Carole King’s Tapestry – but the writing is the star of the show. The dialogue and several epic monologues have been biting, bizarre, hilarious and weirdly ribald for a show ostensibly for teens. The show is still bonkers and insane, but it’s back to doing it well. Don’t miss these last few episodes.
