Petition started for historic designation of one of San Diego’s earliest LGBTQ meeting sites

2004 El Cajon Blvd.

A Change.org petition has been started in support of the historic designation of 2004 El Cajon Blvd., considered to be one of the earliest and most important historic sites in San Diego to the LGBTQ community.

Started by Charles Kaminski of Lambda Archives of San Diego, the petition states that, “The Michels-Carey apartment (2004 El Cajon Blvd.) is the site of the initial organizing, planning and formation of the Center for Social Services, the future LGBT Community Center. Together, SOHO and Lambda Archives have submitted the nomination to the National Register. We need your letters and emails in support of the nomination and preservation of the Michels-Carey house.”

Kaminski writes, “This house is one of San Diego’s most important early LGBTQ sites and deserves the nomination and its preservation as a visible reminder of our history.”
