SAN DIEGO — The second annual San Diego Paws FUR Pink® 5K and 1 mile run/walk will be held Sunday, Feb. 15 at NTC Park at Liberty Station in San Diego. This dog-friendly event partially benefits Susan G. Komen San Diego to support local breast health services and celebrates the unconditional love we share with our four-legged family members.
“Dogs play a big part in the healing process for many breast cancer patients,” said Laura Farmer Sherman, executive director of Komen San Diego. “That’s why we are glad to honor this connection – while raising funds to help a local woman – and her dog – with every step of the breast cancer journey. At last year’s event, $11,727 was raised which is equivalent to over 90 mammograms. This time our goal is to go above and beyond that amount.”
Partial proceeds from Paws FUR Pink® will benefit Susan G. Komen San Diego to support education, outreach, free mammograms, financial and food assistance, transportation and more. All fundraising pledge money raised, 5% of the net proceeds and a $5 donation per 5K and 1-Mile will be allocated post event.
“We place an emphasis on women’s health and wellness and understand that cancer affects not only our daughters, sisters, friends and mothers, but the men in our lives as well. We decided to create an event that includes dogs because we also understand that sometimes the love of our pets is what we need to feel better,” said Lisa Scolman, founder of Paws FUR Pink®. “We’re dedicated to supporting organizations that provide the necessary research, treatment, care, hope and inspiration to those affected by this disease.”
Whether participants are walking to celebrate their own survival, in honor of another survivor or in memory of someone who lost their battle, each runner/walker can expect a memorable, fun-filled morning. In addition to the 5K and the 1-Mile run/walk, the event features a FURever Yours Expo, Lassie Loop Lil Kids Dash, and a PAWsitively Pink Costume Contest. Participants and their four-legged friends are challenged to raise $125, the average cost of a Komen-funded mammogram. Participants raising $125 will earn a Paws FUR Pink® medal.
