Lee Daniels has called his hip-hop soap opera “the black Dynasty” and that’s all I needed to want to record it, but having Terrence Howard as a music mogul, Taraji P. Henson as his criminal wife and Courtney Love wandering around being insane has made me desperate to watch. The overacting is a given, but Daniels and writer Danny Strong are responsible for the most ridiculous campfest known as The Butler, so Empire could be more fun than it has a right being. Apparently, the music, written and produced by Timbaland, is legitimately good, so that’s another reason.
