Of all of the very strange novelty songs and of all the weird Christmas tunes, Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer is possibly the pinnacle. As song by Elmo and Patsy, it’s a crass, tasteless, and very funny yarn about what happens when Santa Claus kills grandma on Christmas Eve. As turned into a terrible, animated courtroom drama, it’s defanged – she lives! – and very dopey. But it’s also kind of amusing, with enough spiked egg nog. And somehow, it’s a hit – a campy, weird, creepy hit that gets an annual airing on the WB and Toon Disney.
