Applications are now being accepted for the The Douglas P. Lathrop Scholarship for the Disabled, founded this past year to honor a greatly loved member of the LGBT and disability community.
The Scholarship is available to students with a permanent mobility disability. Mobility impairment refers to the inability of a person to use one or more of his/her extremities, or a lack of strength to walk, grasp, or lift objects. The use of a wheelchair, crutches, or a walker may be utilized to aid in mobility. Mobility impairment may be caused by a number of factors, such as disease, an accident, or a congenital disorder and may be the result from neuro-muscular and orthopedic impairments.
A standard application process including references and an essay will be required.
Honoring Doug Lathrop, Kurt Cunningham co-founder of the scholarship wrote on his Web site, “[W]here Doug made his biggest impact was just living his life everyday like anyone else. Yes he was disabled, but he never accepted pity or wanted special treatment. To Doug, he was just like everyone else. How could a person like Doug not inspire you? OK OK I can hear Doug now saying “Dude I hate that word inspiring” But Doug, DUDE you were an inspiration.”
The application can be downloaded here or by email at Citizenkurt@hotmail.com
The application deadline is Jan. 9, 2015
