For some reason, Getting On, the genius half-hour comedy about an enormously dysfunctional geriatric unit of a Long Beach hospital, is barely on anyone’s radar. Put it on yours. Nurse Dawn (Alex Borstein) is meek, desperately lonely, and competent; Nurse Didi (Reno 911’s Niecy Nash) is loud-mouthed and not terribly professional; and Dr. James (Laurie Metcalf) is a careerist sociopath. Shot in grainy docudrama style with no laugh track, the humor sneaks up on you. Since it involves old people being very sick, the humor is dark, almost pitch black. But it’s razor sharp, and great satire of the disaster that is American healthcare.
