Next Tuesday, Nov. 4 is an important election as it will decide who will control Congress; but yet most political observers predict a low turnout. Locally there are also important races and let’s hope for a good turnout.
I endorse Gov. Brown for re-election as well as Congresswoman Susan Davis. Let’s make history and elect Carl DeMaio to Congress. They have thrown everything, including the kitchen sink, at Carl and thank goodness the educated voters of his congressional district have rejected all the lies and smear campaigns against him. This race is a “toss-up” and every vote will count!
Finally, there is a City Council District that will produce an Asian-Pacific Islander Council representative as there hasn’t been one for many decades. San Diego has the biggest Filipino population outside of Manila and Chris Cate is the most qualified and educated candidate for City Council.
In the City of Chula Vista vote Mary Salas for mayor and Steve Padilla for City Council. These are my recommendations for some of the many high profile races.
Milk Diner: It’s time to move on
There certainly has been a lot of media coverage concerning the closing of Harvey Milk’s American Diner and a lot of it has been mean and nasty. The sad facts are that a vast majority of new restaurants close within the first year of their opening. In my opinion the diner closed because the food was inconsistent and was not really that good. (That’s why I never reviewed the diner for my column.) We all had some really bad food there and this is because Tom Brown thought he knew everything and had very bad taste buds, if you ask me.
I don’t know about everyone else but I only went there to support my longtime best buddy Big Mike (yes, I liked Frank a lot too). Seems like some people in our community like to kick a dog when it’s down and have gone out of their way to attack the owners in the most vicious and hateful of ways.
No one became rich out of this business gamble and if the truth be known some people got a lot poorer.
The Milk Diner went down because, simply put, the food sucked. Now let’s move on.
About online commenting
Yes, I am glad that we removed that hateful comment attacking LGBT Weekly trans columnist Autumn Sandeen. I disagree with any publication running comments that are not signed with the full name of the writer. As for me, I can dish it out, so I must also be able to take it. But sometimes these comments cross the line and should not be printed.
My father died of Alzheimer’s and yet a letter was published wishing me to die of Alzheimer’s without the full name of the letter writer.
A comment that is full of hate, known lies, vicious and unproven rumors should not be published and, in my opinion, is unfair to both Ms. Sandeen and the trans community.
At the same time, let me say that there have been more women, people of color and transgender people on the LGBT Weekly cover story than any GLBT publication in the history of our community … period.

The article Sandeen wrote outing the person believed to be Gallus Mag should have never been published by your looking the other way you seem to support outing people and denying their freedom of speech.
That is truly a shame to se someone as yourself supporting the invitation of violence upon the author of Gendertrender, and yet you are one of the first to condemn violence against gay men, I guess lesbians don’t count.
Just goes to prove that some people are more equal than others.

The whole Harvey Milk concept was stupid from the get go….but, just curious, Nicole; as you say above the food sucked and it yet gets one of your “Nickys”? Guess the food was good while you got comp’d, now that it’s closed you admit it sucked. Ya gotta love these dumb ass awards and the “Comp Queen” who hands them out.
I was shocked when the diner closed. The whole Harvery Milk Concert was repulsive. I went a couple of times. At first, the food was great but as the time went on I saw the quality in the food go downhill.
It always seems to me at least that they had new staff. I could never figure out with they had a high turn over. Did the employees since that something was wrong? It’s sad to hear that they didn’t pay their employees. However, I am very proud of Frank for making it right to his employees. I am just sad to see some of them go.
Nicole: “San Diego has the biggest Filipino population outside of Manila.”
Incorrect. Los Angeles is. Do you do any research before posting this drivel? And why are you pushing a “Log Cabin” agenda?
The Gay Community should vote for PETERS and KIM, not demaio and cate who are both right-wing republicans!
Nicole wrote the TRUTH about Carl DeMaio two years ago. Then he drank over doses of Log Cabin Republican Kool-Aide, had too many free meals at Harvey Milk’s Diner, and went to the Dark Side.
Here again, the TRUTH about Carl DeMaio from the Pen of Nicole:

“I am not supporting Carl DeMaio because we … San Diego does not know who this man really is. He has two political and social issue faces and is doing anything and everything he can to win. Also, the facts are that Carl DeMaio and Johnathan Hale will be the Ronald and Nancy Reagan of San Diego and we all know that Johnathan has a lot of influence and control over Carl. And Hale is a very mean-spirited and evil man.
This is Carl DeMaio’s real first love and relationship and we all know how our “first loves” make us blind to anything negative about them.
Carl DeMaio has only been in San Diego for about 7 years and he has always had an agenda for power and influence and, sad to say, my “son” has become like that child in the movie The Bad Seed. He has lied and used us all and may indeed have the last laugh as the citizens of San Diego do not know the real Carl DeMaio and his psycho, drama queen lover Johnathan Hale that we, his community and his “mother-mentor” knows.”
