LGBT Weekly was honored with nine awards at the 41st Excellence in Journalism event hosted by the San Diego Press Club, Oct. 28. With the new awards, LGBT Weekly has won a total of 35 awards for journalism excellence since it was founded in 2010.
The event celebrates the talent of the San Diego media in all its forms; broadcast, online, print and radio. “Journalists who cover the stories and people that are important to San Diegans are doing their best work ever, with energy and enthusiasm. The impressive number of entries and spirited competition at the highest level shows a continuing commitment to our profession,” said Kris Eitland, president, San Diego Press Club.
Organizations compete in a variety of categories based upon their segment within the media. Winners are selected by other press clubs across the country and judged by working journalists. For example, the New Orleans Press Club may select the winners in newspaper commentary. The process ensures that the winners are strictly based upon journalism standards and quality. “I am extremely proud of our team and contributors who have made LGBT Weekly the most honored publication and Web site in the LGBT community,” said Stampp Corbin, publisher.
LGBT Weekly won three first place, three second place and three third place awards. “It was a triple trifecta,” joked Steve Lee, editor. He added, “We have a dedicated and talented team of journalists and I’m happy that they have received this recognition. It also speaks to LGBT Weekly’s ability to execute a newsmagazine that informs and entertains the public.”
Among the contributors honored were political columnist Joel Trambley, contributing writers Thom Senzee and Anthony Conwright, food writer Lance Ryder, Thom Harpole and activist Christopher Ward. LGBT Weekly Art Director Jeff Jungblut was honored for best cover design and feature layout design. Publisher Stampp Corbin also received an award for his infamous commentary.
“It is crucial that the LGBT community maintain an honest and unfiltered voice in the media,” said Trambley. “I am proud to be a part of LGBT Weekly, where that mission is accomplished with an excellence recognized by our peers in the press.”
