Many of you will probably remember that I started talking about naming a public school after Sen. Christine Kehoe and finally establishing an AIDS memorial in San Diego in this column years ago (as well as a street named after Harvey Milk).
The GLBT Historic Task Force was established to focus on these three major goals and we have been working on these projects for a long while. Members of the Historic Task Force include Chris Ward, Maureen Steiner, School Board President Kevin Beiser, Doug Case, Michael Phillips, Susan Jester, and I served as chair of the Task Force. After the accomplishment of Harvey Milk Street, we have focused on our school naming project and things are going very well. Next Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Florence Elementary School, 3914 First Ave. in Hillcrest there will be a public meeting starting at 7 p.m. to discuss renaming this school after Sen. Chris Kehoe, and we need your attendance and support as we make history once again.
At last Friday’s AIDS Vigil Rally, I had the honor to announce that Mayor Kevin Faulconer had agreed to the GLBT Historic Task Force’s request and will establish a San Diego AIDS Memorial Task Force to be co-chaired by the first lady of San Diego, Katherine Faulconer. This will mean that our city will finally join hundreds of other cities in remembering the men, women and children we have lost to AIDS – over 7,500 in San Diego County thus far.
These are two major historic developments and the GLBT Historic Task Force will keep you posted on the progress of these projects. For more information: 619-692-1967.
Scott Peters and his Tea Party accusations
In all of Scott Peters’ campaign ads and literature he tries to paint Carl DeMaio as a member and advocate of the extreme right wing Tea Party. He even has little children in his TV ad holding signs accusing DeMaio of being a Tea Party extremist. As far as I am concerned, those accusations couldn’t be further from the truth.
At last Sunday’s AIDS Walk some San Diegans were deeply offended when on stage Scott Peters brought up “Tea Party” a couple of times.– in my view, signs of a desperate political incumbent who is facing the stiffest challenge of his career.
Welcome U.S. Conference on AIDS
San Diego is indeed honored to be hosting the United States Conference on AIDS this weekend. Over 1,000 attendees from all over the USA will be in attendance. Great job to host committee co-chairs Carolina Ramos and Terry Cunningham and all the hardworking volunteers. I will be in Ohio, but I know it’s going to be a most successful national conference.

San Diego is full of Tea Party members and the sooner the self serving political prostitutes who claim to represent the people of San Diego realize this fact the the better things will be.
