One of the most hyped and best new TV shows of the fall, Gotham is a series that serves as an origin story to the world of Batman. It’s focused on young Detective Jim Gordon, the future police commissioner and Batman’s closest compadre. Gordon is played by fierce and handsome Ben McKenzie, the former star of The OC and Southland, and he’s surrounded by a fantastic ensemble including a scenery-devouring Jada Pinkett-Smith as mobster Fish Mooney, a gruff Donal Logue as Gordon’s ethically challenged and hardboiled partner and an unhinged Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, the future Penguin. The art direction is more stylized Tim Burton than hyper-real Christopher Nolan and the score is wonderfully epic. The pilot, which focuses on the investigation of the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents, is one of the most entertaining and interesting I’ve seen in years.
