A committee within the House of Representatives rejected a measure that would make veteran same-sex partner benefits recognized in every state. Currently, veteran same-sex partners lose benefits if the veteran moves to a state that does not recognize same-sex marriage. The panel rejected the idea that these benefits should not be based upon residence within the country.
The vote was along party lines, a noted exception, Representative Jon Runyan (R-NJ) broke with the Republicans and supported the measure. The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs voted 12-13 to defeat the proposed amemndement to the US Code.
