The New Group West presents I Am My Own Wife, by Doug Wright and directed by Mark Zweifach, at the 10th Avenue Arts Center, from Sept. 11-28. I Am My Own Wife will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays.
I Am My Own Wife is based on conversations the playwright had in the late 1980s with Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, then a 65-year-old German transgender person who, against all odds, hid from the Nazis in plain sight as a woman. The play won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize, a Best Play Tony and several other awards.
The one-man play, features James P. Darvas playing 30+ roles. Darvas moved to San Diego six years ago and has learned different approaches from a multitude of creative geniuses. Some of his favorite roles include: Mark in The Shadow Box, John in The Violet Hour, Willum in The Nerd, Howie in Rabbit Hole, Magda in Vampire Lesbians of Sodom and Ivanna in Deconstruction of a Drag Queen.
